romney both very quick to talk about these job numbers. president obama saying, you know, this -- we still have got a way to go, but it proves we are going in the right direction and we can't go back to the policies of the past. >> obama: today's news certainly is not an excuse to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has become too far to turn back now. >> bill: indeed. the president in a campaign event this california talked moyer about these numbers. >> obama: the unemployment rate has fallen down to 7.8% the lowest since i took office. [ cheers ] >> bill: the president can take credit for 4.3 million jobs created in this country since february 2010, 4.1 million jobs were lost in the last year of the bush presidency so president obama as in fact made up for all of the jobs lost under george w. bush -- made up for all of the jobs losted under president bush and adds jobs on top of that. there is no doubt about it that the president can take credit for creating jobs where mitt romney never did. the headline in

49, romney 47. colorado, obama 49, romney 48. both are dead heats within the margin of error. joining us from washington, democratic strategist marge mcclinton in for juan williams and mary katherine ham. the pugh number, 49-45 surprised me, mary katherine. same with you? >> i was a little surprised at how far it moved. i'm not surprised it's moving in mitt romney's favor. i mean, this was 70 million people watching and the guy who showed up, mitt romney showed up to do that job that night was the best he had ever looked and certainly obama, the worst he ever looked on a stage with someone else, i would say when we have seen him in the situations before. people tuned in those 70 million people thinking they were going to be a colts-packers fight, but they were surprised. i think the amount of that surprise worked in romney's favor. i will point out that the pugh survey is probably a little bit more republican than the electorate will end up being, which is something we've had a lot of discussions about. but i do think some of these number should be frightening to them of we've got 49-

. mitt romney holds rallies in both ohio and iowa. and i want to take another look at those two polls that everyone is talking about this morning. they seem to paint different pictures of this race. the pew research center gives mitt romney a four-point lead over president obama. 49% to 45%. that survey did include more likely voters who identify themselves as republicans. however, the latest gallup tracking poll has president obama leading mitt romney 50% to 45%. this poll does include voters who were surveyed before the presidential debate which most voters say romney won though interestingly enough, it showed movement toward obama yesterday. all right. hard to keep track of. there's a lot going on here. cnn political reporter peter hamby joins us live from washington. please, peter, make sense of this for us. >> okay. these are the first two real credible polls we've seen since the debate. the bottom line here is there's movement in both toward mitt romney. you're right. the gallup poll had about three days of sampling before the debate that showed obama winning. after the debate,

four major areas where romney and the president's plan are nearly identical. one is afghanistan. both plan to transfer power to local security forces by the end of 2014. syria, romney wants to give aid to neighboring states. number 3 is iran where both romney and the president say the country should not have access to nuclear weapons. plus yesterday romney promised to restore aircraft carrier groups to the region but we already have one in the gulf. and romney attacked the president for not signing a single agreement in the last four years, but he is wrong. mr. obama has signed agreements with south korea, and panama. we'll be right back. growing up i had a single mother of four and people in the community were so helpful when they didn't even have much themselves. seeing people and their hardships made me want to make a difference in people's lives to give them hope. receiving a masters degree would open the doors for me to get into a management position where i would be able to do more for people. ♪ >> announcer: broadcasting across the nation, on your radio, and on c

vice president biden. both sides have played the lower expectations game. the romney/ryan team has said for weeks joe biden is one of the best debaters in washington, 40 years on the hill. obviously, he knows key policy issues like the judiciary and foreign relations with his time in the senate. he's been preparing paul ryan with former u.s. solicitor-general ted olson. they're going through a mock debate session and policy briefings. tomorrow he goes up to danville, kentucky. he has been ready for this and trying to remain relaxed over the past few days. took his kids out to a pumpkin patch and some reporters asked about the debate. oh, yeah, i should get ready for that. tamron. >> thank you very much, ron. for more on how the vice president is preparing, jokes and all for thus's debate, we go to the news campaign. what kind of scoop have you got for us other than maybe a joke pretending you forget the debate in two days. >> the vice president is in wilmington, delaware at his home. he's taking six full days off the campaign trail here to get ready. he's working with chris van holland,

've said the position on iran for both the president and mitt romney is very, very, very similar. >> well, soledad, we would disagree with that. the president came to power with a hand outreached for engagement. he kept quiet during the green revolution when those seeking freedom and space with civil society in tehran were being beaten, arbitrarily arrested and even killed. and he's continued to reach out. these sanctions he's now imposing now actually were forced on him by democratic senator menendez and republican senator mark kirk. the white house opposed those. the message in tehran has been one of weakness. and not resolve. bismarck, the great leader in europe in the 19th century once said that diplomacy without the use of force is music without instruments. this administration doesn't have credibility. the result is that the president of iran comes to the united states, and he -- he says that israel should be eliminated. he says that we don't have a right to contain his nuclear breakout. then our president doesn't have the time to meet with our best ally in the region, bibi netanyah

what they do over the next several days with both the vice presidential debate coming up and the second presidential debate coming up. one of the thing that is the romney campaign has miscalculated is their definition of presidential -- they have seen this as aggressive and showing strong and might where presidential also means having temperance. having poise and having patience. that's what you saw previously not being applied with the benghazi situation before. let's see if they do it now because this is one of the first times last wednesday that governor romney looked presidential at a time where president obama did not. now, with these issues and the new details coming out, it looks even worse for the administration. and if governor romney and his campaign can take a step back d look presidential in a more holistic way, not only show the strengths in some of the tough talk they have been doing, but show poise and temperature rans with their approach as the details come out, i think it can play well for them and can go very well for them going into the second debate. >> that's intere
